How To Prepare For A Professional Headshot Photoshoot

A headshot or personal branding photo shoot is not just about getting a picture of yourself. It is an opportunity to show the world who you are and what you're about. With that in mind, it's important to prepare your Campbell River or Comox Valley Headshots so that you can make the most of them.

Relax and have fun A headshot is not just a picture of your face; it is a chance to capture your personality. So, relax, and be yourself.

What to wear

You must wear the right clothing when you come in for your professional headshot photoshoot. Your clothing choices will vary depending on the look you are going for. Clothing is essential, and it is clear that fashion has a big impact on us, and our clients.

Overwhelmed with wardrobe.. not a fashion superstar? We totally get it! That's why all of our sessions at Erin Laye Photography include complimentary wardrobe consultation as part of our planning process. We know how important telling the story of your brand is, and we are here every step of the way!

Quick tip from a pro:

If you are looking for a more casual headshot, jeans and a button-up shirt or blouse would be appropriate.

Business attire would be best if you want a more formal look. Whatever you choose to wear, make sure it is clean and pressed. You want to look your best in your headshots!

Communication is key

When preparing for your professional headshot photoshoot, communication is key. That's why we have complimentary discovery, calls with all of our clients. We know our clients are busy people, so we like to hop on a call and discuss all of the details so we are all on the same page.

At Erin Laye Photography we care about you and your business and work with you by asking questions to build out your vision.

By having this line of communication we can help you ensure that you end up with a headshot that you love and accurately represents who you are as a professional.

Plan your shoot day

When planning your professional headshot photoshoot, there are a few things to remember. First, you will want to choose a time that works well for you and your photographer. Know yourself and know your schedule, if you are not a morning person let us know, we offer both morning and afternoon headshot/personal branding sessions.

If you are planning for locations outdoors please keep in mind that the best light is typically early in the morning or late in the afternoon (depending on the time of year). You will also want to ensure you have plenty of time for hair and makeup before the shoot.

Quick Tip: We usually recommend that our clients schedule their headshot/personal branding sessions right after a manicure or their regular self-care. This ensures that our clients feel their freshest and ready to go!

Show up with a fresh face

The main focus will be your face in the headshot session. It is recommended to maintain your usual skincare routine and stay away from anything abrasive or any chemical peels right before your session. We want you to look and feel your best!

Quick tip from a pro:

It is important that you portray an image that is consistent with who you are on a day-to-day basis; therefore, you should wear glasses if people are accustomed to seeing you in them and maintain your facial hair in the same manner that you would ordinarily.

How to style your hair and makeup

When it comes to your hair and makeup for a professional headshot photoshoot, less is more. You want to look like yourself but with a little bit of polish.

At Erin Laye Photography our trained and skilled team of hair and makeup artists know their stuff. They specialize in something called “Camera ready makeup”. This is the less is more approach which means our makeup artists give you the “no makeup, makeup look”. This ensures your skin and hair look flawless on camera and your beautiful features shine through.

What To Do Before Your Headshot Session

Get Adequate Rest

A good night's sleep is essential for looking your best in front of the camera. Make sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep the night before your photoshoot - or whatever amount of sleep helps you function best. It will help you look well-rested and refreshed in your photos.

Relax and loosen up

Feel nervous in front of the camera? That is totally normal. It is our job at Erin Laye Photography to meet our clients exactly where they are.

We do this by:

Giving clients clear directions on posing and expression

  • If we are in the studio, we like to play some music in the background so it's not suuuuuper silent

  • Chit-chatting

  • Showing the client the back of the camera so they know what things look like

Whatever your concerns are just let us know! If you have a "best side" you would like us to capture we would love to know.

What to bring

When you are getting your professional headshot taken, you should bring a few things to ensure you get the perfect photo.

  • You should bring a few different outfits (usually between 3-5 outfits depending on your session)

  • Bring some accessories such as long necklaces, shorter necklaces, rings, hats, etc that align with your branding vision.

  • Remember to bring makeup or hair products for touch-ups to help you look and feel your best.

How to pose

When it comes to getting your professional headshot taken, one of the most important things you can do is to listen to your photographer's directions. At Erin Laye Photography we aim to give our clients clear direction so that they are never left wondering what to do. Some poses may not feel natural and that’s okay, we promise to make you look your best.

Still, looking for quick tips on how to pose? See some tips below from a pro 👇

  1. Stand up straight and tall. Good posture will not only make you look more confident, but it will also help you avoid any unnecessary wrinkles or lines in your photo.

  2. Relax your shoulders and face. It's important to look relaxed and natural in your photo, so make sure you're not tense or holding any facial expressions that might appear fake or forced.

  3. Bring your chin down slightly. It will help elongate your neck and avoid any double chin effect in your photo.

  4. Look directly into the camera lens with a soft gaze. For the best results, keep your eyes from looking too hard or staring directly into the camera. A soft gaze will give you a more approachable and friendly appearance.

By following these simple tips, you'll be sure to rock your professional headshot or personal branding photoshoot!

A professional headshot photoshoot is a great way to update your social media profile picture, or business card or add a new photo to your portfolio.
